Saying hello to an outdated touchstone

Today is your birthday
and I am trying to conjure up a memory
that tugs my heartstrings.

Instead, I am able to recall your lips
the plump swells of each that offset your nose
your cheeks alternating between pale and rosy
your high-pitched laughter that rings in my ears

the smile that comes to my face when I think of you
tells me enough about our past.

I don’t owe you anything more than a thought or two
and would never expect even one thought from you

my childhood friend.
